Chapter Three and Twenty
Early Wednesday morning, Augusta Fitzwilliam rushed into Roseâs sitting room. âOh Rose, I came as soon as I could!â her friend said, sitting beside her and taking her hand. âMy brother told me what has happened.â
The tears that had threatened to emerge finally flowed and Rose could no longer hold them back; she crumpled from the weight of her burden and succumbed to sobs. Augusta wrapped her arms around her, whispering soothing messages. Rose could not bear to speak of the turmoil she had endured and her dear friend demanded no details. How could she allow either Colinâs or Claraâs name to pass her lips? Neither of them had a kind thought for her; their cruel words had thrown her into despair.
Once her tears were spent, Augusta offered her a fresh handkerchief. âI remember when I was a girl, just learning the piano-forte, so eager to know everything all at once. My attempts to play like my music master were dismal,â Augusta said with a merry lilt in her voice. âMy poor papa would groan when I struck a wrong note and Mama would shake her head in misery. Back then I wondered if I would ever perform well. But eventually I did, and so also did you.â
Rose remembered that time; how insignificant her childhood troubles seemed now.
âIt was the same with my drawing. My first attempts were dreadful and I was certain I would never capture each nuance just as it should be.â
âAnd now you are accomplished at both music and drawing,â Rose said.
âAs are you because you are determined and steadfast. Nothing can keep you from your desires.â
Rose embraced Augusta. âMy dearest friend, how I have missed you.â The dark cloud hovering overhead these past months seemed to have disappeared.
âWell, I am here for a fortnight. I will need at least that much time to tell you everything that has happened since we left London.â
Augusta had already written of Richardâs recovery from his injuries. Rose had known that they would eventually marry. âYour colonel must truly be a romantic to stage a surprise wedding,â she said.
Augusta eyes gleamed. âWe were married just a few hours after he proposed.â She went on to describe the events of that day; it was unconventional by anyoneâs standards but perfect for Augusta and Richard. The sound of her voice soothed Roseâs anxieties and helped her relax. They called for tea and chatted undisturbed for the next hour.
When a knock finally sounded on the door, Adele entered to announce that the colonel was impatient to see his bride again.
Augusta chuckled. âRichard has surely enacted some tragedy that we have not been separated this long since our wedding day, which is a hoax, I assure you,â she said with a brilliant smile.
Rose remembered well that glow of young love. âWe must not keep him waiting,â she said, as they descended the stairs, where the colonel and the captain awaited.
âNo indeed, he will pout and there will be no dealing with him,â Augusta said loud enough for her husband to hear, enacting her own drama.
